NFC feels premium and is a hair faster because there's nothing to aim, but the tags cost money and a few older phones need a nudge. The best doors run both: QR for texted and printed passes, NFC for wristbands and the tap-to-enter moment.

Contactless entry has quietly become the default at bars, clubs and events. The clipboard-and-highlighter era is ending because two technologies make check-in nearly instant without asking the guest to download anything: the QR code and the NFC tag. They look similar from the line — flash or tap, you're in — but under the hood they behave differently enough that the choice matters. Let's break it down.

How each one actually works

QR codes

A QR code is just a picture that encodes a link. The guest opens their camera, points it at the code — on their phone screen, a wristband, or a poster on a pole — and their phone offers to open the check-in page. That's it. Every smartphone made in the last decade reads QR natively, no app, no setup.

NFC tags

NFC (near-field communication) is the same short-range radio tech behind tap-to-pay. A tiny chip is encoded with a link; the guest holds their phone within a couple centimetres and the phone opens that link. There's no camera, no aiming, no focus hunt in a dark room. On modern iPhones and Androids it's fully native — no app required.

Where each one fails

Knowing the failure modes matters more than the spec sheet, because the door is a hostile environment: it's dark, it's loud, and the guest is often three drinks in.

  • QR fails when the code can't be lit — a dead phone, a screen at minimum brightness, a crumpled printout. It also invites the "screenshot someone else's pass" problem if your passes aren't single-use or bound to the guest.
  • NFC fails on the handful of phones with NFC switched off or positioned oddly, and the physical tags can be peeled off a poster or wear out on a heavily-used door. Encoding also has to be done right the first time.

Neither failure is common, but each is annoying at the exact wrong moment. The mitigation is the same for both: have a fallback. Which is the real answer.

The real answer: run both

This isn't a fence-sitting cop-out — it's how good doors actually operate. QR and NFC solve different jobs:

  • QR for anything you send or print. A texted pass, a poster on 104th Street, a flyer handed out on the sidewalk — QR is free, universal, and prints anywhere.
  • NFC for the premium touch. A tap band for VIPs, a chip embedded in the host stand, a "tap here to join the list" plate on the bar — NFC feels special and is a hair faster when the line is deep.
Pick the technology per moment, not per venue. The guest doesn't care which radio moved the bits — they care that they walked straight in.

The only requirement is that both feed one guest list. If your QR passes live in one tool and your NFC bands in another, you've recreated the clipboard problem with better hardware. A door system worth using treats QR and NFC as two doors into the same live guest list.
